Surviving a Power Blackout
With much thanks owed to the ever rising and lowering temperatures through-out our solar system, power blackouts could become a norm. Although humans have evolved and become more civilized. Major blackouts can still be synonymous with widespread looting and vandalism in some cases, surviving a power blackout is still a bit trivial if you properly prepare yourself . Here are a few tips on how to survive one.
Be prepared
They do say that the best defense against any problem is being prepared. So make it a habit to check local news for scheduled blackouts. But do not rely on these ones as blackouts do occur accidentally, especially when the temperature is just too high that power grids just can not take the load. Having a solar powered generator is one of the best things you could possibly do to save the food in your refrigerator and to run lights, radios or the TV.
Water and food
Be sure to stock up on water and food supply all the time. Stock up on enough supplies to last a couple of days to a week. Supermarkets or grocery stores may opt to stay closed during blackouts to prevent unnecessary loses due to looting. During blackouts, minimize use of water especially when your water supply relies on electricity too. Flush toilets only when you really have to. You might want to use disposable dining ware during blackouts so as not to waste water with dish washing chores. And try your best to keep your freezer and refrigerator door closed as much as possible to prevent stored food from getting spoiled.
Dry cells
Invest in radios that are battery powered, rechargeable lamps and similar gadgets. Having sources of alternative energy will be more than handy too. Now is the time to invest in solar panels and wind turbines. It does not mean that you will have to adopt the off the grid lifestyle, it is just a safe practice to start in hybrid energy sourcing. That way, you do not feel like life has ended for you when extended periods of power blackouts occur.
Life line
Your mobile phones are useless when the battery dies, thanks to not being able to charge them due to the blackout. Your surviving a power blackout may depend on being able to call for help with the use of old school communications, through a trusty land line. Unless you were prepared enough to invest in solar chargers, but then what good is your mobile phone when everyone else’s is drained of power?
In ice cold weather
Power blackouts can also occur during the dead of winter and may be more dangerous than a summer time power blackout. Darkness and utter boredom will be the least of your worries. Your worst enemy will be the unbearable cold. For your lighting and heating solutions, go for the power of wood and the illumination of candles.
Surviving a power blackout is not impossible but in fact easy. Do remember that there was a time in history when humans have not yet discovered electricity. Besides at today’s time and age, there are still populations out there who live off the grid and lead normal lives, similar to living their whole lives in complete and perpetual power blackout.
